Exeter Chiefs have secured the services of Jason Shoemark from the Highlanders in the Super 14 tournament.
The 29-year-old, who has captained the Highlanders in the Super 14 competition, will arrive at Sandy Park in November on the completion of Hawke’s Bay’s involvement in the NPC.
Shoemark made his first class debut as a 19-year-old for Northland after he was handed the honour to captain the New Zealand Colts.
He has also played NPC rugby for Otago and Super 12s for the Blues. He is regarded as one of the more experienced players in New Zealand.
Head coach Rob Baxter said: "I am delighted that Jason has decided to sign with Exeter Chiefs after making the decision to move his family away from New Zealand.
"He could easily be regarded as one of the best mid-field players not to win a full cap for the All Blacks and I would like to think that during the next two seasons, Jason will bring the leadership and competitive qualities to our team that will be vital in the Premiership.
"He is currently at the top of his game having played a full part in the Super 14 with the Highlanders this year and earning a call-up to the All Blacks squad last season."
Baxter added: "Anybody who has followed the Premiership over the last few seasons will know how physical the middle of the pitch has become and winning that battle will be a key area to our success.
"We will now have some great options in mid-field where I am expecting a lot of competition between the players we now have signed.
"I know there has been an element of frustration with our supporters waiting to see the additions we will make to the squad but I would hope that the signing of a player like Jason Shoemark shows that we are taking our time bringing the right players with the right qualities to Exeter."
