Wales have promoted second string flyhalf Dan Biggar to their starting line up as one of two brave backline changes for their second test against the All Blacks.

Bigger starts ahead of veteran Stephen Jones, who has been nursing an injured thumb through the week but has still been named among the reserves.

The other change to the side thrashed 9-42 a week ago thrusts Jonathan Davies into the centres in place of injured Andrew Bishop.

Coach Warren Gatland had no concerns about playing Bigger, whom he rates as having talent, although he admits that is not a universally held opinion.

"We've known he's a kid with a bit of talent. Back home there's mixed views about Dan, a lot of people love him or hate him."

Wales' captain Ryan Jones said his Osprey's teammate did not lack for confidence and the five-Test novice was not fazed about his mixed reviews.

"Dan doesn't care in the slightest. He's a great kid. I live down from him and share rides daily. He's got a fantastic maturity for a young kid and he knows he's got the talent."

There remained a question mark over whom Bigger would be marking, with All Blacks ace Dan Carter troubled by a calf strain.

Although Carter remained on the team sheet at number 10 following the All Blacks training run on Thursday, Luke McAlister was called into the squad as cover.

Gatland believed the All Blacks coach Graham Henry would leave a decision on Carter until the last minute.

"We understand he (Carter) hasn't trained for a couple of days.... I think Graham will give Dan till Saturday before 5:00 pm before he makes that decision."

Gatland has also made four changes on the reserves bench, with Jones joining the promoted half-back Richard Rees, winger Will Harries and prop Craig Mitchell.
