Newcastle Falcons have confirmed that they have terminated Steve Bates contract with immediate effect.

As reported by Rugbyweek.com earlier today Steve Bates was summoned last week to a meeting this afternoon where he would be dismissed.

Bates paid the price for the Premiership team's disappointing campaign in 2010.

Falcons currently sit 10th and have won just six of their 21 league games.

They finish their Premiership campaign against Wasps this weekend but Newcastle chairman Dave Thompson has decided to make a change now, with first team coach Alan Tait replacing Bates with immediate effect.

Thompson said: "We would all like to express our thanks to Steve for his contribution during his time as director of rugby, and wish him every success in the future.

"With immediate effect first team coach Alan Tait will now take charge as head coach, reporting into chief executive David Bell.

"Alan will be undertaking a review of the playing, coaching and support structure, and announcements relating to that review are expected shortly."

Despite his sacking, Bates insisted he was happy with the team's performances this season.

"I am disappointed at the outcome of this review, but I am proud of what has been achieved this season in a very competitive environment," he said.

"I would like to thank the players and all of the back-up staff for their support and effort."
